Empowering the Next Generation of Shearing and Wool Handling Professionals

Behind every premium, ethical wool garment is a skilled team ensuring quality from the very first step:  shearing and wool handling. These professionals play a crucial role in preparing wool fibre for the global supply chain. Yet, in recent years, fewer people have entered the industry, creating a risk of losing talent to other sectors or overseas opportunities. Without proper training, the risk of injury, to both people and animals rises. And because wool harvesting is the first stage of the supply chain, it is the cornerstone of quality assurance and brand credibility from farm to finished product.

Addressing an Industry Challenge

In 2020, after discussions with the grower community about what support was needed, The New Zealand Merino Company, along with our brand partner, VF Corporation and Elite Wool Training, launched the Shearing & Wool Handling Cadetship. This programme was designed to attract new talent, provide world-class training, and ensure high standards of animal welfare and professionalism. Since then, 80 cadets have successfully completed the course, building skills that strengthen both the industry and rural communities.

Traditionally, shearers and wool handlers have had limited visibility of market requirements for fibre quality. Under The New Zealand Merino Company (NZM) contract model, wool harvesting is critical in ensuring that fibre meets brand specifications. By educating professionals at this early stage, we can reduce wastage, improve quality, and ensure the well-being of both people and animals.

Developing Skills and Leadership

Established in 2020, the Cadetship is designed to attract new entrants, upskill promising talent, and develop leadership within the wool harvesting industry. Delivered by Elite Wool Industry Training (EWIT), the programme combines classroom learning with hands-on, in-shed experience. Over a three-month period, cadets gain technical skills, animal welfare knowledge, health and safety training, and insights into brand and market expectations.

The Impact

The cadetship is more than a training programme; it’s an investment in people and the future of the wool industry. It promotes animal welfare, encourages new entrants, builds technical and leadership skills, and positions wool harvesting as a viable, fulfilling career.

In December 2025, the New Zealand Government announced a pilot with additional funding in partnership with industry to upskill wool harvesters.  This additional investment will complement the training programme and further raise the bar for animal care and welfare in wool harvesting.
